A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, Menorca is the most serene of the Balearics: a coastline of white sand and clear water stitched together by the Camí de Cavalls, two historic harbour towns and a stone-walled interior dotted with prehistoric monuments. Here, space and quiet are the real luxury. This guide takes you from the southern coves to the northern fishing villages, with everything you need to choose when to go and where to stay.

What to see and do

The destination's essentials, hand-picked to spark your trip.

Cala Macarella and Macarelleta

Two sister coves of white sand and turquoise water framed by cliffs and pines on the south coast. You reach them on foot from Cala Galdana along the Camí de Cavalls — part of their magic is that no road runs down to the shore.

Ciutadella's old town

The former capital keeps a maze of lanes, noble palaces and a Gothic cathedral above a harbour tucked into a ravine. At dusk, its terraces and golden light make one of the island's finest scenes.

The Camí de Cavalls

A historic path of some 185 km circles the whole island along the coast. Split into 20 stages, it lets you walk from cove to cove past dunes, pine woods and old watchtowers; some sections are flat and easy, others wilder.

Talayotic Menorca

The island guards hundreds of prehistoric stone monuments — taulas, talayots and navetas — such as the Naveta des Tudons or the Torre d'en Galmés settlement. This ensemble has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023.

Maó harbour and Monte Toro

Maó overlooks one of the world's largest natural harbours, perfect for a boat trip. Inland, Monte Toro, the highest point (358 m), crowns the island with a monastery and coast-to-coast views.

Menorcan flavours

Mahón-Menorca PDO cheese, Fornells' lobster stew and the British-era gin — drunk as pomada with lemonade — sum up the island's larder. Local markets and distilleries round out the experience.

When to go

Menorca is a warm-season destination: it shines from late spring to early autumn, when the sea invites you in. High summer gets busy and in winter many coastal services close, yet the island always keeps trails and towns to explore.

Spring (April–June)

The countryside fills with flowers and the temperature is ideal for walking the Camí de Cavalls and finding coves without crowds. The sea is still cool early on, but by June the first swims begin. A great time for photography and hiking.

Summer (July–August)

Peak season: guaranteed sun, warm water and every cove and beach bar in full swing. It is also the busiest and hottest time, so arrive early to park and enjoy the most famous beaches before midday.

Autumn (September–October)

For many, the best time: the sea stays warm after summer, crowds thin and prices ease. September keeps a beach mood; October is quieter and ideal for trails and food, with the odd rainy day.

Winter (November–March)

The island turns intimate and authentic. The climate is mild but windy, and many coastal hotels and restaurants close. This is the season of hiking, unhurried villages and the Menorca the locals know.

Where to stay

The neighbourhoods and areas with the most charm to stay in.

Maó (Mahón)

The capital, set above its great natural harbour, is a central, well-connected base with the airport nearby and ferries to the mainland. It offers restaurants, city life and easy access to eastern beaches — ideal if you prefer a town to a resort.

Ciutadella

At the western tip, the old capital charms with its historic centre, its sunsets and its stroll-and-tapas mood. A fine choice for those after character, food and closeness to some of the best southern coves.

Cala Galdana and the south

Cala Galdana's arc of sand and the neighbouring resorts are the classic beach base: family-friendly, comfortable and a short walk from postcard coves like Macarella and Mitjana. Perfect if the sea is your main plan.

Fornells and the north

This white-washed fishing village on a sheltered bay means calm, watersports and lobster stew. The wilder, windier north draws those after rugged scenery and quiet.

Practical tips

The small details that make travelling easier.

Rent a car

Public transport is limited and many coves lie far from the towns. A car gives you freedom to move north to south; book it well ahead in summer, when demand outstrips availability.

Beat the crowds at famous coves

Car parks at coves like Macarella or Turqueta fill early and some accesses are regulated in high season. Arrive early or late in the day, and consider walking in or coming by boat.

Carry some cash

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but it helps to carry some cash for beach bars, markets and small villages where a card reader isn't always on hand.

Sun protection and the north wind

The sun is strong and many coves offer little shade: a hat, sunscreen and water are essential. The tramontana wind blows on the north coast, so a windbreaker and shoes for the rocks are handy.

Menorquí and Spanish

Menorca speaks Catalan in its Menorcan variant alongside Spanish; in tourist areas English works fine. A greeting in Catalan is always appreciated.

Respect the Biosphere Reserve

The whole island is a Biosphere Reserve, with marine reserves and protected dunes. Don't tread on dune vegetation, keep to marked paths and leave no trace on the coves.

Frequently asked questions

From late May to early October for the sea. July and August are the warmest and busiest months; June and September offer great weather with fewer people. Spring and autumn are ideal if you'd rather walk and explore.

We took a trip to Egypt with our grandchildren in October 2025, booked with the Travel Care agency. Communication and information before the trip was smooth and effective. The departure formalities were simple thanks to the help of their agents. Apart from a problem with the visa that delayed us two hours on arrival (not attributable to the agency, but to the incompetence of the Egyptian officials), the support of the local agents (SAMA TRAVEL) was also very good. Our motor vessel, Málaga, was not the most modern or the most luxurious, but it was clean, spacious, and the food was tasty, plentiful and varied, with many options for coeliacs or vegetarians. The staff a 10: charming, professional and with very personal and close treatment. The Cairo hotel, Tulip, is modern and spacious but it is isolated and far from everything. This was a problem since the food and room service were very poor and slow, and there were no other options without grabbing a taxi. The advantage is that it is near the airport if your flight leaves early. A special mention for our guide, WAEL, alias "GUAY". Thanks to his early starts we managed to arrive first at all the visits, which let us enjoy the best Egyptian sunrises accompanied by his excellent and well-documented explanations, avoiding the hours of maximum tourist crowds. He is a renowned Egyptologist who speaks perfect Spanish and knew how to convey his enthusiasm for his culture and his country. An excellent travel companion, always cheerful and cultured, he knew how to create an excellent atmosphere in the group, which became the FAMILIA GUAY. In the end we were all friends (without invading everyone else's privacy). Thanks to WAEL and to the professionalism and kindness of the ship's staff, and to the support of the agencies, we will remember this trip through Egypt not only as a cultural experience but also as an excellent personal memory.

Trip to Egypt, 4 nights on a Nile cruise (Luxor-Aswan), 3 nights in Cairo. Our first experience of this kind and in our view, everything was very well organized. Upon arrival at Luxor airport, Travel Care's staff welcomed us and took us to the boat, where our guide Wael (Guay to his friends) was waiting for us and explained the included and optional visits (we wished they had given us an approximate price for the optional visits before the trip). The itinerary was very comprehensive, with visits to different temples, pyramids, mosques, markets, the Nubian village and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Although on some days we had to wake up very early, it was worth it to find the less crowded places and avoid the hottest hours (we went in August and the heat is unavoidable). A highly recommended trip and the Travel Care's attention both before and during the trip was excellent.

Hi, the trip very good, appropriate value for money, everything very well organized and the destination a wonder and safe. The boat a bit old but very tasty food and good service. In Cairo the hotel also very good but a bit far away, but after so many excursions it's good to rest. The local guide very nice but in a big hurry and a difference in the price of the excursions he offered compared to the group next to us; the guides should agree on the price because it makes you think he was giving himself a tip, but well, it's an unimportant detail, then he got less tip and that's it.

We traveled to Egypt in November 2025, we took a promotion through a website unrelated to travelcare and, upon seeing that the hotel they assigned us was very far from the center, we requested a category change; the first time they told me it wasn't possible and a week later they themselves wrote to me again saying they had another operator, a bit more expensive but with more excursions and the hotel central in Cairo. At the airport GALAXIA picked us up, couldn't be better, while there were huge queues of monturista (thank goodness I didn't book with them); the person in charge from our company received us in a minibus and kept telling us things until we reached the cruise. The guide on the trip wasn't spectacular but the cruise NILE PARADISE and the RAMSES HILTON, the hotel in Cairo, no complaints and within what we expected! (You have to be realistic and know that you're going to EGYPT not to a 5-star in Dubai🤣) We would definitely do it again, above all grateful that it came from them to write to us about the change and make things easier for us since we were about to cancel when we just received the possibility. Thanks to the Galaxia team! Thanks Travelcare, an incredible trip!
